ReactOS

by tibbar @ 2006-07-15 - 22:31:13

ok this is off topic, but with the digg hype surrounding reactos at the moment, i thought i'd try it out, as i wanted a light weight windows to run under vmware on linux (instead of NT4).

it's a complete joke imho.

example: installed firefox, tried to download and save a zip to desktop. 1st attempt seemed not to save a file, second attempt led to BSOD!!!

i don’t see what the difficulty is here. all they need to do is build the kernel and ensure usermode ntdll.dll has 100% compatibility with windows. Then you could use MS binaries for all other system dll that are effectively wrappers around ntdll.dll (excluding sockets)...ok you might have legal issues here, but this is ok provided you own an old copy of windows, which everyone on the planet does virtually!

Even the mouse movement in ReactOS is flickery and weird. The project has been going for ages now and achieved very little compared to what the unix based OS's have managed. Perhaps they should give up and stick to WINE, which is actually useful.

Who wants another version of windows, free or not? Lets face facts, Windows is bundled with every pc in the world nearly, so having a free version is pointless.

Getting WINE working perfectly would be a much better use of time and effort.
